Today marks the 46th anniversary of the Kent State shootings. I’ll never forget hearing about them, in a barber shop in my home town just before I graduated high school. A guy from a class or two before mine attended Kent State. Wild as these times are, they are not as wild as the ’60s (I consider Kent State the final nail in the coffin of the decade) and they don’t approach the worldwide chaos and madness of the ’30s and ’40s. Since Plato, many of the best thinkers have considered the various forms of government and the responsibilities of leaders and citizens alike. Informed engagement is the sine qua non of our form of government, and I urge us all to thoughtful, passionate, compassionate and respectful discourse and action.
