My dad died 11 years ago this week. Hard to believe it’s been that long. He was, among other things, a character. Here are some of the things I remember him saying more than once. In some cases, way more than once:

1. Life is a do-it-yourself kit.

2. (paraphrasing Eleanor Roosevelt) Small minds talk about people. Average minds talk about events. Great minds talk about ideas.

3. It’s better to be an hour early than a minute late.

4. (when I’d done something of which he approved) You’re not as dumb as you look.

5. Son, you never know what true happiness is until you get married. And then it’s too late.

I forgot the one I’ve used the most…
6. Find something you love to do. Then find someone dumb enough to pay you to do it.
